Despite being on the mainland of Greece, a lot of people think of it, more like an island. The fact that it is coastal and notably picturesque, contributes to that feeling.

We are talking of course about Parga. Parga is located in the northwestern part of the prefecture of Preveza. Apart from its natural beauty, the city has a particular historical interest as it was the only city that Ali Pasha never achieved to conquer.

More specifically, Souliotes fled to Parga after the fall of Souli and from there they were uprooted along with the Pargans when the English Commander of the Ionian Islands, Thomas Mettland, sold Parga to Ali Pasha.

The inhabitants of Parga, had a strong connection with the Ionian Islands, which were also under England’s domination. England and Thomas Metland after the liberation of Corfu in 1814, decided to sell Parga to Ali Pasha in order to strengthen him and to reduce the influence of the Russians in the region. Ali Pasha had at the time Parga under siege for many years without result.

He wanted the city so much that had built a castle in Anthousa, a village on a hill just outside Parga, a spot that would allow him to coordinate the siege and control the city.

After the city was sold to the Turks, many residents were forced to leave their homeland and go to Corfu.

Today, the beautiful town of Parga is a very popular tourist resort during summer, where visitors are flocking not only from Greece but also from abroad.

Moreover, Parga is an economic, commercial and tourist center of the region. Among its attractions, one can distinguish the picturesque island of Panagia, on which you can see a church and medieval Venetian and French buildings.
